Aaron Josef Hernandez (born November 6, 1989) was a professional football tight end in the United States. He played three seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the New England Patriots before being released.

This occurred following his arrest as a result of Odin Lloyd’s murder. He and fellow draftee and teammate Rob Gronkowski, one of the league’s most dominant tight-end duos, became the first to score five touchdowns in consecutive seasons for the same team.

Following his death, his attorneys petitioned the Massachusetts Superior Court for a reversal of his murder conviction, which was granted on May 9, 2017. He was declared to have died as an innocent man under state statutes because he was appealing his conviction.

While the autopsy report determined that Aaron Hernandez died by suicide, his family requested that his brain be released for analysis at Boston University, where it was discovered that he had brain lesions consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
