Summer Lyn Glau (born July 24, 1981) is a talented ballerina-turned-actress from the United States.
She is best recognized for her portrayal as River Tam in the science fiction and fantasy television series Firefly (2002) and the sequel film Serenity (2005).

Early Life
Summer Glau was born on July 24, 1981, in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Mari Glau and Mark Glau.
Her mother was a teacher, while her father was a general contractor.
Summer Glau was home-schooled as a child since she was studying to be a classical ballet dancer at the same time.
Ballet dancing requires a lot of devotion, and traditional ballet dancers train for around 10 years.
Summer Glau eventually developed into a great dancer, was a soloist with her ballet company, and began working with a symphony at the age of 14. Her career as a dancer was tragically cut short.
Ballet is a graceful and powerful dancing form. However, it has been reported to induce hip, foot, knee, and ankle ailments in dancers. Stress fractures and arthritis are also rather prevalent.
Summer Glau’s trouble began with a fractured toe that she would not allow to heal on her own time. For four months, she danced on this toe.
Summer Glau soon got tendinitis in her ankle, preventing her from using her foot at all. Her ballet dancing career came to an end when she was 19 years old.
Summer claims that she worked in commercials and danced the tango for a year to help pay her bills before becoming a great actress.
Education
Summer Glau was homeschooled from grades 3 to 12 to facilitate her ballet studies after receiving a scholarship to a dance company. She also learned tango and flamenco in addition to classical ballet.
Career
Summer Glau left her home in Texas and moved to Los Angeles when her ambitions of becoming a dancer were cut short by injury.
She received her first on-screen role in 2001 on Joss Whedon’s series Angel, after spending two years in L.A. Her first role was as a dancer, which is a nice coincidence.
