Inetimi Timaya Odon (born 15 August 1980), better known by his stage name Timaya, is a well-known Nigerian singer and songwriter. He established DM Records Limited.

His solo career began in 2005 with the release of “Dem Mama,” which was also included on his debut album, True Story, which was released the following year. Gift and Grace, his second album, was released in 2008.

Meanwhile, his third studio album De Rebirth—released in collaboration with Black Body Entertainment—and its lead single, “Plantain Boy,” helped him gain additional visibility and international prominence.

Both were commercially successful and earned him money, with which he collaborated on the album LLNP with Dem Mama Soldiers (Long Life N Prosperity). Timaya released Upgrade in 2012, which spawned the hits “Bum Bum,” “Sexy Ladies,” and “Malonogede.”

Timaya’s Early Life

Inetimi Timaya Odon was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on August 15, 1980. He grew up in Agip Estate, Port Harcourt, as the youngest of fifteen children in a large family.

He is from Odi in Bayelsa state.

His father worked in banking, and his mother worked in trading. Timaya received his early education at Assemblies of God Nursery And Primary School. His secondary education began at Nkpolu Oroworukwo Secondary School in Port Harcourt.

He would frequently violate house rules in order to attend late-night music events. Timaya’s mother arranged for him to travel to Lagos with his older brother and sister before he could graduate from high school. After moving to the city, he enrolled in Lagos’ Ikeja Grammar School, where he eventually earned a secondary school certificate.

Timaya later returned to Port Harcourt to pursue a tertiary education in Banking and Finance. However, he failed his exams and dropped out after the first semester. He returned to Lagos as a backup vocalist for Eedris Abdulkareem’s hip-hop group.

Timaya left the group after three years to focus on his solo career after working for Eedris Abdulkareem. He started recording collaborations with other emerging artists and made his first cameo appearance in an unreleased music video by UDX, a Lagos-based rap group. After hearing him perform the a cappella version, he met producer Obaksolo in Mafoluku, Oshodi, who produced his first major hit record, “Dem Mama.”

On his first album, True Story, he collaborated with Namse Udosen (Menthol X) on the track “Pomporo.”

Timaya described the song in an August 2013 interview: “‘Dem Mama’ was an account of the 1999 destruction of Odi, a riverside community in the Niger Delta.” Soldiers were looking for militants who allegedly killed eight police officers. The village was destroyed by fire, and many people were killed. Years later, I bravely confronted the issue and gained instant street credibility for my bravery.”

Timaya’s Education

Timaya received his pre-primary and primary education at the Assemblies of God Nursery and Primary School. He then went to Nkpolu Oroworukwo Secondary School in Port Harcourt.

Before finishing secondary school in Port Harcourt, his mother forced him to accompany his elder brother and sister to Lagos. When he arrived in Lagos, he was admitted to Ikeja Grammar School.

Timaya returned to Port Harcourt after secondary school to study Banking and Finance at the university, but he dropped out after failing his first semester exams.

His Career

Timaya decided to continue working with producer K-Solo after the success of “Dem Mama.” He recorded seven additional songs for his debut album True Story, which was released in 2007.

Timaya began working on his second album with producers Phyno, Jeggs, Spankie, Akeem D Beat, Obaksolo, and Terry G later that year.

The album Gift and Grace was released in stores across the country in 2008.

Timaya received two awards in 2008: “Album of the Year” at the Nigeria Music Awards and “Best Reggae/Dancehall Album” at The Headies. At the 2009 edition of The Headies, he also won two awards: “Best Reggae/Dancehall Album” for Gift and Grace and “Best Collaboration” for his feature on J Martins’ “Good or Bad (O Wey).”

Timaya’s third album, De Rebirth, and its success-themed lead single, “Plantain Boy,” were released two years later. Akeem D Beat, Phyno, Flux, M-Yire, Jay Sleek, N.D, Jesse Jagz, and Obaksolo produced the album.

Timaya worked with guests such as 2Baba, TJ 2Solo, Allenian, Konga, Lanre, MI Abaga, TJ, and Wrecoba. In 2010, he sang on the song “Kokoroko” by female gospel artist Kefee, which won “Best Collaboration” at the 2010 Headies Awards. He was recently featured in a song called ‘Erima’ by Kcee.

Timaya released LLNP (Long Life And Prosperity), a collaborative album with his crew, Dem Mama Soldiers, in November 2011. Ras Kimono, a legendary reggae singer, appeared on the album’s second track, “Dem No Like Me.” On June 25, 2012, he released Upgrade, a 14-track album that included the hits “Bum-Bum,” “Sexy Ladies,” and “Malonogede.”

Collaborations on the album include Attitude, Terry G, and Vector. Duncan Mighty and Timaya’s duet “I Know I Know Dat” leaked online just hours after the former’s album Footprints was released. Both artists were honored alongside M-Trill, Sodi Cookey, Becky Enyioma, and Timi Dakolo at the 4th annual Odudu Music Awards.

He released his fifth studio album, Epiphany, in 2014. The 20-track album featured global hits such as “Bum Bum Remix” (featuring Dancehall A-Lister, Sean Paul), “Sanko,” and “Ukwu.” 2Baba, Patoranking, Olamide, Sir Shina Peters, Deethi, Phyno, and Terry G were also featured. Timaya performed at the first-ever Afro-Soca Concert in Nassau, Bahamas, in 2017.

Timaya released an EP titled Chulo Vibes after 5 years of releasing singles and touring (2019). East African artist Alikiba, Trinidadian Soca Legend Machel Montano, and Nigeria’s Burna Boy all contributed to this project.

Timaya established his own record label, DM Records Limited. He developed artists such as Patoranking and Runtown through this label. He signed young Dancehall/Afro-Fusion artist King Perryy to his DM Records imprint in 2017.

His Personal Life

Timaya goes to Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel. He has three lovely children, one boy and two girls. He resides in the opulent mansion he built in Lekki, Lagos.

He had two children, Emmanuella Odon and Gracey Odon, with his girlfriend, Barbara Nwaokolo. Timaya was once in a relationship with Empress Njamah. He had one child from a previous relationship, Maya Odon.

His exotic and expensive car collection reflects how God has blessed him through his music. His vehicles include a Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, a Range Rover Sport 2013, a Range Rover Sport 2016, and a Lexus SUV 2015.
