Who is the 2022–23 captain of Arsenal, and who has led the Gunners in the past?

Despite Martin Odegaard’s relatively recent arrival at the club, Mikel Arteta has delegated leadership responsibilities to him.

In the Premier League era, only 12 players have held the position of club captain at Arsenal, and a distinguished roll of honor includes luminaries like Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, and current head coach Mikel Arteta.

Following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure from Emirates Stadium in January, a number of other players assumed various leadership roles on the field, but few can say they have had the honor of serving as the team’s permanent captain.

Who will lead Arsenal in 2022–2023?

On July 30, Arsenal made the announcement that Martin Odegaard had been named the team’s new captain.

Despite just joining the Gunners in 2021, the 23-year-old has already had a significant impact on English football, and Mikel Arteta has chosen to honor him by giving him the captain’s armband.

Who were the potential captain prospects for Arsenal?

Arsenal needed a new captain after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was relieved of his duties in December 2021 due to a breach of club discipline.

Since a fellow frontman was transferred to Barcelona in the winter transfer window, Alexandre Lacazette regularly assumed that task. However, he went for Lyon in the summer, leaving a void to be filled.

    Martin Odegaard

After Lacazette left, Martin Odegaard became a popular choice for donning the illustrious armband.

The Norwegian playmaker, who serves as captain of his nation already, previously stated that he would appreciate the chance to captain north London on a permanent basis.

Odegaard told TV2 that although it is significant, little has changed. I think I’m performing the same actions.

There are more folks nearby that are considering it. But it is a wonderful acknowledgement and a wonderful pledge of faith. I greatly appreciate the compliment, but aside from that, I carry on as usual.

    Tierney, Kieran

Scottish full-back Kieran Tierney endured another challenging season in 2021–22 after needing surgery for a knee issue that has kept him out of play since the end of March.

When healthy, he continues to be Arteta’s go-to player and would have seemed to be a popular choice among Arsenal supporters had he been asked to step up and assume the leadership duties.

Tierney has the respect and adoration of every player and staff member at Arsenal, according to Arteta, who has previously praised Tierney for his ability to lead by example. He just is, that’s all. He carries it out naturally.

He is also a very quiet youngster, but he stands in for all of us in the club; all of the ideals that we want to instill and that are ingrained in our organization.

    Granit Xhaka

If Granit Xhaka had been named the permanent captain ahead of the new season, the Swiss midfielder would have completed an incredible comeback with the Gunners.

The abrasive 29-year-old previously held that position, but was demoted in November 2019 as a result of a highly public outburst towards Arsenal fans while being booed off the field during a match against Crystal Palace.

Since then, he has improved his standing and responded to a question from Sky Sports by saying, “I will never say never. Again, I wasn’t prepared for that.

“An Arsenal captain can play without the armband, and I’m trying to lead the team and the game without it, but if someone from the football club comes by tomorrow and asks if I want to take the armband, I’ll be here because I know I’m ready to do it again.”

    Richard Ramsdale

The current number one goalkeeper for England and a full international, Aaron Ramsdale has previously said he would be willing to take over as captain if asked.

“Listen, I’d take the responsibility, but that’s up to the manager,” he said in a statement to FourFourTwo.

However, we have a lot of guys who I believe would be terrific captains and a lot of strong characters.

“I would be happy with anything just to hear the words “you’re in a leadership capacity. You never reject down a captaincy, and I believe I would flourish if handed the reins, but the decision ultimately rests with the boss.
