Yvonne Chaka Chaka was born in Dobsonville, Soweto, in the year 1965.
She grew raised with her mother and siblings (two sisters), Doreen Machaka and Refiloe Machaka, when her father died while she was just 11 years old.
As a result, Sophie Machaka, her mother, was left as the only bearer of duty.
Education
Her, her sisters, and her mother had a difficult time because her father, the “primary earner,” had died.
Despite the circumstances, she did not give up on herself. She was allowed to continue her studies and, in fact, completed two degrees in adult literacy and municipal government, management, and administration at South Africa University.
Career
She made a memorable appearance on the show Sugar Shack in 1981, as the show’s first black kid. Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s unique and appealing voice set her apart from her contemporaries, making her open and appealing to talent scouts. Phil Hollis of Dephon Records signed her up in 1985, when she was barely 19 years old, because of her distinctive voice. I’m in Love with a DJ, her debut album, sold over 35,000 copies.
She went on to release additional albums such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka Motherland, Who is the Bose, Burning up, Sangoma, Thank you, Mr. DJ, Power of Africa, Be Proud to be African, Who’s Got the Power, Kwenzenjani, and many more after this tremendous success and acceptance by her followers.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka has released more than 20 albums and a lot of successful songs. Miriam Makeba, Annie Lennox, Angelique Kidjo, Bono, and Johnny Clegg are among the superstars she has performed with.
